When Rick and Morty Revamped to a massive 70-episode order in 2018, there has been a lingering question about how the team behind the series will handle episodes from then on. The first three seasons of the animated series were counterproductive to build on a serialized storyline, and much of the series’ early humor was actively responding to audiences asking for such a thing. But with Season 3 debuting these elements, and Season 4 building on that, Season 5 had a clear runway to dive into a more central storyline. Now that Season 6 is here, things have taken to the next level.
Rick and Morty Season 5 ended with some of the most dramatic story beats in the series to date, and the epilogue literally opened the series into a whole new multi-world of potential leads to follow. Fortunately, Season 6 didn’t rule out any of these efforts and continued to build on what came before. Without sacrificing any of the occasional laissez-faire approach to the way situations unfold, Rick and Morty Season 6 raises all of this material in small portions of the sequence that have been such a drag in recent years. It’s a compelling development for this upcoming era of the show.
Without delving too much into the why and how of things, Season 6 opens with a first-hand follow-up to the events of the Season 5 finale. That’s right, there’s an immediate promise to the season that he’s not going to completely ditch the work that came before. There was an issue in previous seasons where character development wouldn’t really continue from episode to episode, but there’s a general atmosphere that no longer resists the ebb and flow. The series allows characters to switch and change while still being able to play with them in different situations.
There was an initial concern about whether introducing more sequential rhythms than we had previously seen would overburden the freedom that was at the core of it. Rick and Morty For a long time, but they really do add an extra layer of spice that longtime fans will appreciate. It’s hard to discuss any of these particular stories in detail without spoiling the fun of seeing her in action, and that’s honestly something I’m still trying to get around. Surprisingly there are things you absolutely have to spoil, and that’s what makes Season 6 a completely different kind of viewing experience than before.
Rick and Morty He had a lot of experience balancing the more intense moments with the high-energy comedy fans who got to know the series, and that’s on full display with the series’ sixth season. For example, the first two episodes of the series differ significantly from each other in tone, structure, and humorous core premises proving that there is no sacrifice of the lighter, freer episodes in favor of this additional interest in the sequence. So those who don’t want to worry about Rick’s origins, how Morty feels, or any other way can watch freely as well.
Like previous seasons, there are some jokes that don’t necessarily land and some fans may like certain episodes more than others. At the same time, Rick and Morty Season 6 still feels like the fruits of years of evolution towards a much bigger picture. It’s a sophisticated season in many ways, and it’s still just as funny as fans expected. There are rewards for those who have enjoyed the long-term storytelling thus far, and just as the Season 5 finale promised, Season 6 unlocked whole new multiverses to explore.
